Today, we’re excited to share the brand new single “Lavender” by LA artist James V, the third in a string of singles to be featured on a Marriage Records (Dirty Projectors and tUnE-yArDs) LP in 2020.
The music of James V could be accurately described as “psychedelic synth funk” and “Lavender” holds true to a general connective established by predecessors “Television” and “Blondie”. “Lavender” is, however, a slower, more deliberate affair with the psychedelic aspects jacked up. If “Blondie” was an upbeat yet awkward dance club hit for introverts, “Lavender” is a prom slow dance after drinking several cups of punch spiked with less than legal attributes, or perhaps more accurately, an imagined dance with an old partner after a binge. The song’s perspective seems to be a tongue-in-cheek post-breakup track with lyrics such “I’m not lonely / Why would you even ask?” and the repeated “One last kiss / Tastes like piss”. It stumbles forward with a drunken stupor, warped, echoing synths, and huge, thick detuned guitars in a desperate plea for one last piss taste kiss from his beloved Lavender.
